Welcome to Volunteers Week 2020 – 1st to 7th June

Volunteering is a wonderful, kind and compassionate gift that makes our communities and society better and richer.  Volunteers Week provides a focal point in the year to thank everyone who volunteers and to celebrate their vital contribution.

There are thousands of active volunteers in North Lanarkshire of all ages and many more registered waiting for a suitable role. The majority of volunteers are hosted and supported by a community and voluntary organisation but many give their time informally to help neighbours.  Both types of volunteering  are vital all the time but the COVID 19 pandemic has highlighted how critical volunteers are as they support people who are unwell, self-isolating or shielded through activities such as shopping and delivering food and other essential items; wellbeing and befriending calls and even dogwalking!

Voluntary Action North Lanarkshire plays a key role in promoting and supporting volunteers across North Lanarkshire, working closely with voluntary and community groups, the council and NHS. VANL supports registration and matching of volunteers to appropriate roles and works with volunteer-involving organisations to help them support volunteers effectively, including management of “Volunteer Friendly” accreditation.

Since the start of the COVID 19 crisis, VANL has registered over 500 new volunteers who are currently being matched to volunteer roles in North Lanarkshire. Given that there are also many long-established volunteers in North Lanarkshire who are providing support during the pandemic, new volunteer roles are not being established quickly and so it will take some time to find roles for all newly registered volunteers.

VANL, North Lanarkshire Council and NHS Lanarkshire are working together to thank volunteers during Volunteers Week by creating videos of local groups and volunteers, along with thank you messages from representatives of VANL, North Lanarkshire Council and NHS Lanarkshire. These videos can be found on our social media pages and will be posted each day during Volunteers Week.
